Dharma Heirs of the Mahāsiddha Tilopa

Dharma descendants of Mahāsiddha Tilopa played an important role by establishing numerous Vajrayāna Buddhist Orders in Tibet. Among others, the Karma Kagyu, the Drukpa Kagyu the Drikung Kagyü, the Taglung Kagyü, and the Shangpa Kagyü trace their lineages back to Tilopa. Additionally, several Tantric practices which have now been integrated into basically all other Tibetan Buddhist orders have Mahāsiddha Tilopa, Nāropa and/or Maitripa as their source.
The 12-13th century gave rise to the four major and eight minor Kagyü schools. The four major schools include the Phaktru Kagyü, the Kamtsang or Karma Kagyü, the Tsalpa Kagyü, and the Barom Kagyü.
The eight minor Kagyü schools include the Drikung Kagyü, the Drukpa Kagyü, the Taklung Kagyü, the Yasang Kagyü, the Trophu Kagyü, the Shuksep Kagyü, the Yelpa Kagyü, and the Martsang Kagyü.
Many of the masters listed below were pupils of numerous teachers from different orders, therefore the following diagram is at best an approximation of lineage. Biographies have been linked in from, where possible, living representatives of the corresponding orders as well as from www.tibetanlineages.org.
