Dharma Heirs of Je Tsongkhapa
The Gelugpas

The present day Gelug School traces it's roots back to Je Tsongkhapa who is considered to be a mainfestation of the Bodhisattva Mañjuśri. Prophesied by both Śakyamuni Buddha and Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), Je Tsongkhapa was born in Amdo in 1357. He studied at Drikung Kagyü, Karma Kagyü, Nyingma, Kadam, and Sakya monasteries and showed an amazing ability to memorize texts.

Due to the fact that Je Tsongkhapa was heir to the three principal Kadampa transmissions, the Gelug School is often considered to be a later continuation of the early, now extinct, Kadampa School.
Je Tsongkhapas founded the Monastery Ganden in 1409 which became the seat of Geluk administrative and political power. The "Ganden Tripa" the throne-holder of Ganden is the official head of the Gelugpa School. Je Tsongkhapa's pupils also established Sera and Drepung monasteries which together with Ganden were considered to be the "Great Three" Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet.
