The Fourteen Dalai Lamas

The Institution of the Dalai Lama came into being in 1578 when the Mongolian ruler Altan Khan gave the title "Dalai Lama" (Ocean of Wisdom) to the monk Sonam Gyatso. Previous incarnations of Sonam Gyatso were also posthumously desgnated as the 1st and 2nd Dalai Lama. Since then the Dalai Lamas are considered to be emanations of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Chenresig) and serve as the symbolic "head of state" of Tibet.
